When practicing architecture in Hawaii, Rae Douglass was intrigued by the open air quality of island architecture and the effect that the ever present trade winds have on pendant light fixtures. Rae started making light fixtures and established his company Light Ray Studios after he invented a means to enable a chandelier to move and “dance” in the wind like a Calder mobile. Rae not only had to invent a system to balance the fixture, but had to design a co-axial electrical swivel to transmit electricity to each arm.
